Waukegan, IL – A Lake County Jail inmate faces multiple charges after allegedly attacking a correctional officer earlier this month.
On January 3, a correctional officer conducting routine rounds encountered inmate Raymond L. Smith, 46, of Zion. Smith, held on homicide charges, reportedly had an excessive number of books in his cell. When instructed to return most of the books, Smith allegedly became enraged, clenching his fists and striking the officer repeatedly.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Smith attempted to choke the officer before the officer used pepper spray to subdue him. Backup personnel transported Smith to a maximum-security pod.
The officer sustained contusions and lacerations and was treated at a local hospital. He returned to work the next day. Smith now faces three counts of aggravated battery to a correctional officer and two additional charges.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg commended the officer’s resilience, highlighting the risks correctional staff face daily. Smith remains in custody following a court appearance on the new charges.
“All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.”
