Lake County, IN – September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to honor those lost to suicide, support individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts, and highlight the resources available to prevent further tragedies. Suicide is a pressing public health concern affecting people across all ages, genders, and backgrounds. With more awareness and education, advocates aim to reduce the thousands of preventable deaths each year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 49,000 Americans died by suicide in 2022, which averages to one death every 11 minutes. Data shows that 13.2 million people in the U.S. seriously considered suicide, with 1.6 million attempting it. In Indiana, suicide ranks as the 11th leading cause of death, with the highest impact on young adults aged 10 to 24. Men are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than women, with firearms being the most common method used in over 50% of cases.
To provide support, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 for anyone in need. Indiana’s Jake Laird Law (Red Flag Law) allows law enforcement to remove firearms from individuals deemed a danger to themselves or others. Removing firearms can be crucial in preventing suicide in crisis situations.
