Cedar Lake, IN – Firefighters in Cedar Lake are urging residents to remain alert Tuesday after Monday’s severe storms triggered a surge in emergency calls and left hazards scattered across parts of the community.
According to the Cedar Lake Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 5141, the department responded to 22 calls for service in less than 24 hours while operating with a staffing level of just five personnel. Officials described it as an “exceptionally busy day” as crews handled storm-related emergencies across the area.
As cleanup continues, firefighters warned that residents may still encounter downed trees, low-hanging or fallen power lines, and other storm damage during their morning commute and throughout the day. Emergency crews expect periods of high call volume as recovery efforts continue.
The department also reminded residents to stay prepared for future severe weather by keeping multiple ways to receive weather alerts, identifying a safe location inside their home, and maintaining an emergency kit stocked with water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and other essential supplies.
Officials also stressed generator safety for those still without power. Generators should never be operated inside homes, garages, basements, crawl spaces, or near windows or doors because they produce carbon monoxide, an odorless gas that can be deadly. Firefighters recommend placing generators outdoors at least 20 feet from a home and allowing them to cool before refueling.
The department thanked Cedar Lake Police, Cedar Lake Public Works, dispatchers, and residents for their patience and cooperation during the severe weather response.
Anyone who encounters a downed power line should stay away from it, assume it is energized, and immediately report it to 911 or the local utility.
