Gary, IN – A head-on collision at 4th Avenue and Johnson Street on Monday evening claimed the life of a Portage woman.
Gary Police responded to reports of a crash at approximately 5:52 p.m. A caller indicated two vehicles collided, with one emitting smoke. Upon arrival, officers discovered both drivers trapped inside their vehicles.
The Gary Fire Department worked to extricate the victims. A 24-year-old Gary woman was transported to Methodist Northlake Hospital with injuries. The other driver, a 37-year-old Portage woman, was unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased and confirmed her death. The Gary Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the incident to determine its cause.
Authorities are urging drivers to remain cautious and report any information about the crash.
