Gary, IN – A 10-year-old girl died after being shot Wednesday afternoon in Gary, and the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation into the child’s death.
According to the Gary Police Department, officers responded at approximately 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, to the 4200 block of Maryland Street after receiving a report of a female juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound.
When officers and medics with the Gary Fire Department arrived, they found the 10-year-old girl with a gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said preliminary information indicates there is no ongoing threat to the public and that the incident appears to be isolated to the residence where the shooting occurred.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has claimed the life of a young child,” Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon Sr. said in a statement. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the victim’s family and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss.”
According to police, the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation. Authorities have not released additional details about how the shooting occurred or whether any arrests have been made.
