Beach Park, IL – A multivehicle collision in Beach Park on Tuesday morning sent three people to the hospital, including one driver in critical condition.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 8 a.m. to the intersection of Sheridan Road and Michigan Boulevard after a GMC Acadia, driven by a 74-year-old Zion man, allegedly veered out of control while traveling northbound on North Sheridan Road. The vehicle allegedly struck the stop arm of a loading school bus that was stopped in the northbound lanes near Mawman Avenue.
No one on the bus, which included two children and a driver, was injured. Authorities confirmed the bus itself was not hit.
The GMC then allegedly sideswiped a northbound Ford Focus driven by a 49-year-old Beach Park man, pushing it into a utility pole. It continued on, allegedly striking a southbound Chevrolet Colorado, driven by a 39-year-old man from Winthrop Harbor, and a southbound Ford Flex driven by a 28-year-old Fox Lake woman.
The GMC driver was transported in critical condition to an area hospital. The Ford Focus and Chevrolet Colorado drivers were also hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The Ford Flex driver was reportedly uninjured.
Investigators believe the GMC driver may have experienced a medical episode prior to the crash. The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
