Lake Charles, Louisiana – Dangerous heat is set to intensify across southwest Louisiana, central Louisiana, and southeast Texas beginning Monday, with heat index values climbing as high as 114 degrees by the middle of next week. The prolonged stretch of hot, humid weather will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for people working outdoors and those without reliable air conditioning.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, a strengthening upper-level ridge will build east across the region through next week, limiting cloud cover and rainfall while allowing afternoon temperatures to climb into the mid-90s to around 100 degrees. Combined with increasing Gulf moisture, the humidity will push apparent temperatures into the 105 to 114-degree range from Monday through Friday.
Forecasters expect the heat risk to reach major and even extreme levels across portions of southwest and central Louisiana and southeast Texas. Communities including Lake Charles, Lafayette, Alexandria, New Iberia, Opelousas, Beaumont, Jasper, DeRidder, Leesville, and Woodville could experience several consecutive days of hazardous heat with very little overnight relief.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water and beverages containing electrolytes, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon, wear lightweight clothing, and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
The weather pattern will remain largely dry through much of the week, allowing the heat to build each day. Additional heat advisories, watches, or warnings are likely as confidence increases in the duration and intensity of the event.
