Springfield, Illinois – Central Illinois will see a brief round of morning showers and thunderstorms Saturday before a much hotter weather pattern takes hold to begin the new week. Cloud cover will linger through much of the day, keeping temperatures below normal in some locations before widespread 90-degree heat returns Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered showers and thunderstorms will be confined mainly to the morning hours Saturday, with low clouds taking longer to clear. Rain chances are highest across central and southern portions of the state early in the day before drier conditions spread across the region during the afternoon.
Saturday’s highs will range from the upper 70s near the Indiana border, including Danville and Paris, to the middle and upper 80s near the Illinois River Valley, with locations such as Quincy, Jacksonville, and Beardstown reaching 86 to 89 degrees. Springfield is expected to top out near 84 degrees, while Peoria reaches 85 degrees, Decatur 81 degrees, Bloomington 81 degrees, Champaign 78 degrees, and Effingham 79 degrees.
The break from the heat will be short-lived. High temperatures are forecast to surge back into the 90s on Monday across much of central Illinois before easing slightly Tuesday. Residents planning outdoor work or recreation early next week should prepare for increasing heat and humidity by staying hydrated, taking frequent breaks, and limiting strenuous activity during the afternoon.
Travel conditions may be briefly impacted Saturday morning by locally heavy rain and reduced visibility, particularly along Interstates 55, 57, 72, 74, and 70. While widespread severe weather is not expected, motorists should use caution on wet roads until showers move out.
