La Porte, IN – Authorities in La Porte County are warning residents once again about a recurring phone scam involving individuals impersonating sheriff’s office personnel.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office issued a public advisory Tuesday urging citizens to be cautious of unexpected phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to be affiliated with the department.
According to a Facebook post from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, the scammers are targeting hardworking residents by pretending to be deputies or other agency employees. Officials emphasized that any unsolicited call from someone claiming to be with the sheriff’s office should be considered suspicious and immediately disconnected.
The department described the perpetrators as “lowlifes” and urged residents not to engage or provide any personal information. These types of scams have appeared periodically throughout the region and are part of a broader trend of law enforcement impersonation cases across Indiana and neighboring states.
Local law enforcement is reminding the public that legitimate communications from the sheriff’s office will not involve threats, requests for immediate payment, or demands for sensitive information over the phone. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious calls to the sheriff’s office directly at (219) 326-7700.
Authorities also asked residents to share the warning with family and neighbors, particularly elderly individuals who may be more vulnerable to such schemes.
This latest scam alert highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces as technology is exploited to deceive and defraud the public. Community awareness and quick reporting remain critical tools in combating these fraudulent tactics.
