According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a residence in Knox County on Saturday, January 4, after receiving information that a male subject allegedly shot and killed his dog the previous day. Authorities also received information suggesting the man, a convicted felon, may have been in possession of firearms.

Following an on-scene investigation and additional follow-up work, deputies obtained and executed a search warrant at the residence. During the search, authorities located and seized multiple firearms, the deceased dog, and items described as drug paraphernalia.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident, officials said.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Jon P. Benson, 50, of Wataga, Illinois.

As a result of the investigation, Benson was charged with five counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, reckless discharge of a firearm, disorderly conduct, and violation of the Humane Care for Animals Act.

Benson was transported to the Knox County Jail, where he was processed in accordance with standard procedures. No injuries to deputies were reported during the arrest.

Authorities emphasized that the case remains a criminal matter pending court proceedings.
