Jackson, Ky. – Isolated severe storms could sweep through eastern Kentucky today, bringing strong wind gusts and heavy downpours to areas like Hazard, Prestonsburg, and Jackson by evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a marginal risk (Level 1 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms remains in place for much of eastern Kentucky through tonight. While cooler temperatures will limit overall instability, increased wind shear from a low-pressure system could still trigger scattered thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and high rainfall rates.
Counties including Pike, Floyd, and Perry are under the greatest threat, with showers building this afternoon and continuing into the evening. Travel could be impacted on routes like KY-15 and US-23, particularly if downpours reduce visibility or lead to ponding on roads.
Residents are advised to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Charge electronic devices and avoid outdoor activities during any periods of thunder or lightning. Though the severe threat is low, quick-developing storms can still pose localized hazards.
Storm activity is expected to taper off by late evening, but updated advisories may be issued if conditions worsen. Stay tuned to the NWS for the latest alerts.
