Schererville, IN – Two Kentucky men’s alleged attempt at a slick getaway fell flat after police intercepted their truck filled with 1,600 gallons of stolen grease.

On December 9, the Schererville Police Department responded to a witness report of a silver Ford truck allegedly involved in a theft in progress. Officers stopped the vehicle and discovered evidence linking the suspects to stolen grease from multiple local restaurants.

According to police, Roberto Valdes-Gonzalez, 39, and David Leyva-Ricardo, 30, both of Louisville, Kentucky, had been collecting the used grease without permission. The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office approved burglary and theft charges against both men on Wednesday, including a Level 5 felony.

Used grease is highly sought after for biodiesel production, making it a lucrative commodity. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether the suspects acted alone or as part of a larger operation.

Police urge local businesses to secure their grease storage containers and to report suspicious activity. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Schererville Police.
