Omaha, NE – Portions of Interstate 80 are closed in both directions between mile markers 426 and 439, spanning from west Omaha to Ashland, due to multiple crashes and hazardous conditions caused by freezing rain.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, the closure comes as eastern Nebraska experiences significant ice accumulation, making travel extremely dangerous. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory, which remains in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday, warning of up to two-tenths of an inch of ice and localized snow mixing overnight in northeast Nebraska.

The advisory cautions drivers to expect slippery roads, particularly during Friday evening commutes. The freezing rain is also impacting areas across west-central Iowa and east-central Nebraska. Authorities urge motorists to avoid travel in affected areas and to call 511 for the latest road conditions if travel is unavoidable.

Freezing rain events such as this have the potential to create widespread power outages, in addition to travel disruptions. Residents are advised to stay indoors and use caution if venturing out.
