Grand Rapids, MI – Authorities have identified the two victims in a deadly shooting on the city’s southwest side and announced charges against an 18-year-old suspect in connection with the case.

The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2026, near Oakland Avenue SW and Rumsey Street SW, on the property of Southwest Elementary School.

According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting and found two victims suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. The victims have been identified as Savanah Villarreal, 38, and Jeremiah Griffin-Cuevas, 15.

First responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene. The teen victim was pronounced dead at the location, while Villarreal was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Police say the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Rafael Martinez-Lopez, has been charged with two counts of open murder, along with multiple felony firearm and weapons charges. Arraignment is pending.

Investigators allege the suspect fled the scene following the shooting but was later taken into custody without further incident.

The case remains under investigation by the department’s Major Case Team. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Grand Rapids Police Department or submit anonymous tips through Silent Observer.

Police officials said the community continues to grieve as the investigation moves forward.
