Oswego, IL — A fire involving construction equipment disrupted traffic and prompted a multi-agency emergency response in Oswego Friday morning.

According to the Oswego Fire Protection District, crews were dispatched shortly after 10:30 a.m. to the area of Wolf Road and Fifth Street following reports of construction equipment on fire. While firefighters were en route, Kencom Dispatch updated responding units that a second excavator had also ignited, prompting officials to request additional resources.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered that the fire was fueled by a ruptured underground natural gas line. Firefighters immediately began securing the scene and protecting surrounding structures while coordinating with NICOR Gas to contain the leak. No injuries have been reported in connection to the fire.

As of 6:30 p.m., officials confirmed the gas flow had been shut off and the fire extinguished. Cleanup and investigation efforts are ongoing, with Wolf Road expected to remain closed for several more hours into the evening.

Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including Oswego Police, Oswego Public Works, Kendall County Emergency Management Agency, OSHA, EPA, NICOR, the Illinois Commerce Commission, and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Officials emphasized there is no ongoing hazard to the public. Residents are reminded that in the event of a natural gas odor, they should call 911 or contact NICOR immediately at (888) 642-6748.
