Dodge City, Kansas – Heavy rain and thunderstorms could soak much of southern Kansas by Thursday night, with up to 2 inches possible near the Oklahoma border.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms will develop throughout the day Thursday and intensify into the evening. Widespread rainfall between ½ to 1 inch is expected across the region, with localized pockets nearing 2 inches in southern counties such as Comanche, Barber, and Clark.
Some of these storms may turn severe, producing large hail and damaging wind gusts over 50 mph. Travel may become hazardous on highways including US-283, US-160, and US-54 during peak storm activity. Low-lying roads and flood-prone areas could briefly flood under heavy downpours.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts, and avoid driving through flooded roads. Power outages may occur in rural areas if winds intensify or lightning strikes infrastructure.
This system comes on the heels of a dry May in much of western Kansas, and though it offers much-needed rain, the severe potential adds risk.
Rain chances taper off early Friday, but additional storm activity is possible into the weekend.
