Springfield, Missouri – Drivers across southern Missouri faced dangerously low visibility Thursday morning as dense fog settled over the region, especially in the Ozark Plateau. Travel could remain hazardous until mid-morning due to fog reducing visibility to less than one mile in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, fog formed overnight and may persist through 10 a.m. Thursday, particularly in higher terrain. Motorists are advised to slow down and use low beam headlights. Low water crossings—especially in rural areas—may be difficult to see if partially flooded.
Travel conditions may change suddenly as pockets of denser fog develop along major highways, including U.S. Route 60 and Interstate 44. Emergency services have warned drivers to avoid unnecessary trips this morning and to remain alert for reduced visibility near hills and valleys.
The fog is expected to dissipate by late morning as temperatures rise. However, NWS officials note that additional fog patches may return overnight into early Friday. Another update will be issued if visibility issues persist into the afternoon hours.
