Dodge City, Kan. – Southwest Kansas is heading into an extended stretch of intense summer heat, with afternoon temperatures hovering near or above 100 degrees for much of the coming week and overnight lows offering little relief.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, high temperatures will consistently reach the upper 90s to lower 100s through next weekend. Cities including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, Scott City, Hays, Larned, Elkhart, Syracuse and Medicine Lodge are expected to experience multiple days of dangerous heat.
Forecast highs include 97 to 99 degrees in Dodge City, 99 to 100 degrees in Garden City, 98 to 102 degrees in Liberal, 98 to 99 degrees in Scott City, and 101 to 104 degrees in Medicine Lodge, one of the hottest locations in the region this week. Overnight temperatures will remain unusually warm, generally in the upper 60s to upper 70s, limiting overnight cooling and increasing the risk of cumulative heat stress.
Residents should avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces. Outdoor workers should schedule regular rest periods, and everyone should check on older adults, young children and anyone without reliable cooling. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short time.
No widespread cooling trend is expected through the upcoming weekend, with temperatures remaining well above seasonal averages. Residents should continue monitoring local forecasts for any Heat Advisories or additional heat-related alerts as this prolonged hot pattern persists.
