Wichita, Kansas – Severe thunderstorms could rattle central and south-central Kansas late Monday night, with wind gusts reaching 60 mph and quarter-sized hail expected in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms are likely to develop after 9 p.m. Monday and may persist into early Tuesday. The greatest threat zone includes Russell, Hutchinson, Wichita, and surrounding counties, where isolated severe storms could bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and pockets of hail.

Cities like Salina, Pratt, Harper, and Winfield are also under risk level 1 or 2 for severe weather. The primary concerns are wind damage to trees and power lines, as well as the potential for hail to impact vehicles and crops. Residents are urged to keep phones charged and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts overnight.

While the system is not expected to produce widespread damage, late-night storms pose added danger for sleeping households. This marks the first significant severe storm event of June for central Kansas.

Warnings remain in effect through early Tuesday, with updates expected from the NWS late Monday evening.
