Springfield, Missouri – Drivers, outdoor workers, and vulnerable residents across central and southern Missouri face a high risk of heat exhaustion through 10 p.m. Sunday, as dangerous heat index values climb above 105 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Heat Advisory is in effect for east-central Kansas through much of central and south-central Missouri, including Springfield, Lebanon, Osage Beach, Clinton, and Nevada. Afternoon highs will hit the lower 90s, with heat indices ranging from 95 to 105°F. Overnight relief will be minimal, as temperatures dip only into the low- to mid-70s.

Road crews, outdoor eventgoers, and athletes should take extra precautions. The primary hazards include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration. Breezy southerly to southwesterly winds may offer slight relief but can also accelerate dehydration.

Residents are urged to check on the elderly, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Cooling centers may open in some communities if temperatures persist.

Though scattered thunderstorms may return by midweek, the oppressive heat is expected to continue through Thursday.
