Wellington, Kansas – Drivers and residents in Wellington should steer clear of low-lying roads Wednesday night as Slate Creek spills over its banks, triggering a flood warning through early Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, Slate Creek reached 19.2 feet by 6 p.m. Wednesday—just above the 19-foot flood stage. The creek is expected to crest at 19.4 feet by midnight before receding below flood levels by early morning. Minor flooding is ongoing and forecast to continue overnight, primarily impacting Sumner and Cowley counties.

Floodwaters are already encroaching on low-lying areas along the creek. Local officials advise against driving through flooded roadways or bypassing barricades. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains critical guidance as even 2 feet of water can sweep vehicles away.

Residents in flood-prone zones should secure valuables and prepare for brief disruptions. While no major infrastructure impacts have been reported, localized flooding could affect rural routes and nearby farmland.

The flood warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday, with the next update expected by 6:30 a.m. Stay tuned for continued advisories.
