Albany, Georgia – Roads and low-lying areas across parts of southwestern Georgia could flood Wednesday night as intense thunderstorms dump inches of rain over rural communities like Shellman and Doverel.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 11:45 p.m. for northeastern Calhoun, southeastern Randolph, and southwestern Terrell counties. Radar estimates show 2 to 4 inches of rain have already fallen, with more on the way. Officials warn that flash flooding is either underway or imminent.
Trouble spots include small creeks, streams, and poorly drained streets near Shellman, Martins Crossroads, Aycock Mill, Doverel, Fountain Bridge, Goffs Mill, Pachitla, Graves, Clarks Mill and Shivers Mill. Highway underpasses and rural roads could become impassable within the hour. Emergency responders urge drivers to turn around if they encounter flooded roads — most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles.
Residents should remain alert, especially near Clarks Mill and Shivers Mill, where runoff from earlier storms could surge quickly. Power outages and brief road closures are possible.
The Flash Flood Warning stays active until 11:45 p.m., but additional advisories may follow if storms continue. Keep phones charged and stay tuned to local alerts.
