Kansas City, Missouri – Roads south of Interstate 70 could begin flooding by late afternoon Friday as repeated thunderstorms track over the same areas and dump heavy rain.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, storms will develop this afternoon and continue through the evening, with the highest flood risk focused near and south of the I-70 corridor. Rainfall totals exceeding 2 inches are possible where storms repeatedly move over the same locations, a setup known as training.

Communities including Olathe, Lee’s Summit, Sedalia, and areas near Clinton and Marshall face the greatest risk for rapid water rise. Major routes such as I-49, U.S. 50, and stretches of I-70 could see water-covered pavement during peak storm activity, especially between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Ground conditions remain saturated from recent rainfall, increasing the likelihood that water will quickly run off into streets, creeks, and low-lying areas. Flash flooding may develop with little warning in urban zones and poor drainage areas.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded roads and monitor alerts closely. The flood threat will persist through Friday night, with additional warnings likely if storms repeatedly impact the same risks.
