Kankakee County, IL – A 29-year-old Bourbonnais man died Sunday morning after a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a bicycle east of Manteno, prompting a lengthy road closure and an ongoing investigation by local and state authorities.

According to the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:41 a.m. Sunday to the 4000 block of East Road, about one-half mile north of 6000 North Road.

When deputies and emergency personnel arrived, they found the bicyclist unconscious and unresponsive in the roadway. Members of the Manteno Fire Protection District immediately began lifesaving measures before transporting the victim to a local hospital.

Despite those efforts, the bicyclist, identified as Bailey C. Caldwell, 29, of Bourbonnais, later died from his injuries.

The Illinois State Police are assisting the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office by conducting a comprehensive traffic crash reconstruction. Investigators said they will continue reviewing all available evidence to determine what led to the collision.

As emergency crews processed the scene, a portion of 4000 East Road remained closed for several hours before reopening to traffic later Sunday.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Caldwell during this incredibly difficult time,” Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey said in a statement. He also expressed sympathy for the driver involved, witnesses, and first responders who responded to the scene.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
