Springfield, IL – Chris Hodge, a high school art teacher from Batavia, has won the prestigious Best of Show award in the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ cicada-themed art competition. His ink and illustration board piece, titled “Dawn of the Cicada,” depicts a newly emerged cicada greeting the dawn, symbolizing the creature’s transformation from darkness to light.
The contest, launched in response to the rare double-brood cicada emergence earlier this summer, drew nearly 350 entries from artists across the state. The competition featured various media, including painting, photography, and sculpture, and was judged by experts from the Illinois State Museum and the IDNR.
Hodge’s artwork, praised for its intricate detail and thoughtful concept, is currently on display at the 2024 Illinois State Fair in Springfield. It will be exhibited in the law enforcement tent in Conservation World through Aug. 18.
According to IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie, the contest showcased the impressive talent and creativity of Illinois artists. The public can view all entries online and vote for their favorite in the People’s Choice category until Aug. 18.
