New Lenox, IL – A Joliet man was taken into custody this week after allegedly posing as a police officer, forcing his way into a New Lenox home while wearing a Halloween mask, and demanding gold from a 74-year-old resident.
The incident happened late Wednesday night around 11:44 p.m. in the 500 block of N. Cooper Road. According to the New Lenox Police Department, the victim told officers that a man knocked on his door, claimed to be a police officer, and then forced entry into the home. Once inside, the intruder, later identified as 61-year-old Brian K. McDaniel, allegedly assaulted the victim and demanded valuables.
McDaniel was reportedly dressed in black clothing and concealed his face with a black plastic Halloween mask while wielding a firearm. Authorities said he struck the victim multiple times in the face, causing injuries that required hospital treatment. During the attack, McDaniel allegedly threatened the victim and made specific comments about items inside the home, suggesting prior knowledge of the property.
Despite the mask, the victim recognized McDaniel, who he had known for more than a year. Investigators say McDaniel stole a firearm, coins, and jewelry before fleeing the scene.
Detectives located McDaniel in Tinley Park on Friday and arrested him without incident. Police later confirmed that McDaniel had been given details about the victim’s possessions through a mutual acquaintance, and that the home was intentionally targeted.
McDaniel faces multiple felony charges, including home invasion, armed robbery, aggravated battery, and impersonating a police officer.
