Ann Arbor, MI – A hate crime investigation is underway after a Jewish man was assaulted near the University of Michigan early Sunday. The attack occurred around 12:45 a.m. at Hill Street and S. Forest Avenue. The 19-year-old male victim told police that a group of unknown males approached him, asking if he was Jewish. When he confirmed, the group assaulted him and fled the scene.
According to the Ann Arbor Police Department, the victim sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalization. He reported the incident later that day at 12:20 p.m. Police have assigned the case to their hate crimes unit, treating it as a bias-motivated assault.
Chief Andre C. Anderson said the department is working with University of Michigan police and the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation is in its early stages, with limited information available about the suspects.
