Marianna, FL – A late-night traffic stop in Marianna early Monday reportedly turned into a high-speed pursuit and drug trafficking arrest, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the incident began around 1:19 a.m. when an officer attempted to stop a vehicle driving carelessly along Highway 90 near Dogwood Street. The driver allegedly refused to stop, turning abruptly and speeding away through several intersections before crashing into a tree on Decatur Street.
According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect—identified as Jequantavious Trayshon Owens—fled on foot. A K-9 team tracked the suspect’s scent to a vacant home on Russ Street, where Owens was allegedly found hiding in the attic and taken into custody without further incident.
Deputies said a search of the vehicle uncovered approximately 77 grams of methamphetamine, 2.7 pounds of synthetic cannabinoids, and a firearm. Owens faces multiple charges including trafficking in methamphetamine, trafficking in synthetic cannabinoids, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, and obstruction without violence.
Sheriff Donnie Edenfield thanked the Marianna Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol for their assistance, emphasizing the risks posed when suspects flee. “When someone decides to run, it creates danger for everyone around them,” Edenfield said.
The sheriff’s office encouraged residents with information on illegal drug activity to contact their office.
