Ithaca, N.Y. – Damaging wind gusts could impact communities across the southern Finger Lakes this afternoon as thunderstorms flare up in the region, prompting a heightened severe weather risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Slight Risk (2 out of 5) for severe storms is now in effect for parts of the Southern Tier and southern Finger Lakes, including Ithaca, Elmira, and Watkins Glen. The primary threat is isolated to widely scattered wind gusts strong enough to knock down trees and power lines. The radar as of 1:56 p.m. Thursday shows developing storms pushing eastward from western New York.

The greatest risk for damaging gusts is expected between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., especially in low-lying areas and along open stretches of Route 13, I-86, and other regional highways. Drivers are urged to watch for sudden wind shifts, fallen debris, and poor visibility during any stronger cells that pass through.

Residents should secure outdoor objects, stay indoors if thunder is heard, and charge devices in case of power outages. While the storms are not expected to be widespread, any isolated storm could become locally intense with little warning.

Additional weather statements or warnings may be issued through the evening.
