Des Moines, IA – A powerful early spring storm is expected to bring strong winds and snow to much of Iowa from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions across the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, rain will transition to snow Tuesday night as winds intensify from the northwest. Snowfall accumulations between 2 and 5 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible near the Minnesota border. Winds exceeding 50 mph could lead to blizzard conditions, reducing visibility to less than a quarter of a mile at times.
The storm is forecast to impact a large portion of central Iowa, including Des Moines, Ames, Fort Dodge, Waterloo, and surrounding areas. Roads may become snow-covered and slick, making travel dangerous, especially during the Wednesday morning commute.
Drivers are advised to prepare for rapidly changing conditions, delay unnecessary travel, and stay updated on forecasts. The storm is expected to subside by late Wednesday morning as winds gradually weaken.
Authorities urge residents to have emergency kits ready and check for road closures before traveling. Updates will continue as the system develops.
