Des Moines, IA – A strong cold front will sweep into Iowa tonight, bringing gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph and bitterly cold temperatures. Residents should prepare for an Arctic blast expected to linger through early next week, with wind chills as low as 30 below zero forecasted.
According to the National Weather Service, the first effects of the front will bring high winds this evening, particularly along and north of Interstate 80. By Saturday, temperatures will plummet to single digits, with lows near zero expected overnight. Wind chill values of 10 to 20 below are possible Saturday morning, worsening to 15 to 30 below Sunday through Tuesday.
The coldest period is expected Sunday night into Monday, as temperatures drop to -2°F with wind chills pushing extreme lows. These conditions pose serious risks of frostbite and hypothermia within minutes of exposure.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity and bundle up in layers if venturing out. Ensure vehicles have emergency supplies, and pets should be brought indoors. The weather service reports little potential for snow accumulation, but icy road conditions may occur due to freezing wind and precipitation tonight.
Looking ahead, Monday will remain frigid with highs near 8°F, while Tuesday brings slight relief with sunny skies and a high of 13°F. Conditions will gradually improve into midweek, with temperatures expected to reach 30°F by Wednesday.
