Davenport, Iowa – Drivers across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois could face sudden downpours and dangerous lightning by the late Wednesday commute as a cold front pushes storms directly into the Quad Cities region.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a low-pressure system will move through Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night, triggering another round of showers and thunderstorms. Some storms may turn strong to severe between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., with the greatest concern centered on damaging wind gusts and large hail.
The risk spans from Cedar Rapids through Iowa City and into Davenport, Moline, and Rock Island, with storms tracking east toward Sterling and Peoria. Interstate 80 and I-74 corridors could see reduced visibility under 1 mile during heavier downpours, while localized rainfall totals may exceed a half inch in spots, increasing the chance of ponding on roads.
Emergency managers warn that frequent lightning and isolated tornado potential cannot be ruled out, especially in stronger cells. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.
This system may bring repeated rounds of rain, raising the risk for isolated flooding in low-lying areas. Additional advisories or warnings could be issued as storm timing becomes clearer through Wednesday.
