Families across Iowa–Illinois may want to take a closer look at their grocery lists.
On Tuesday morning, the United States announced it is suspending imports from Spain due to the country’s role in the escalating Iran conflict. While that may sound like international politics, the effects could reach kitchens in Chicago, Rockford, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and communities throughout the Midwest.
Spain supplies a variety of food products to the United States. When imports are suspended, supply tightens. When supply tightens, prices often rise — especially on imported cooking staples.
The biggest item to watch in your home is olive oil.
Spain is the world’s largest olive oil producer. Many olive oil brands sold in Iowa and Illinois rely partly or fully on Spanish supply — even some bottles labeled as blends from other countries. If shipments slow or stop, grocery stores and warehouse retailers could raise prices quickly.
Other pantry items may also see increases. Spanish olives used in pasta salads and pizzas, anchovies for dressings and sauces, smoked paprika for seasoning meats, and manchego cheese for gatherings are commonly imported. If you cook often — especially Italian or Mediterranean-style meals — you may notice price changes in the coming weeks.
Restaurants across Iowa–Illinois could also feel the pressure. Italian restaurants, pizza shops, and seafood spots use large amounts of olive oil and imported ingredients. Higher supply costs may lead to higher menu prices.
This is not a shortage situation. Stores will still have options. But when imports are cut off, prices often move up before alternative suppliers are secured.
Households in Iowa–Illinois that regularly use these items may want to review pantry staples before costs rise further.
