Fayette County, IA – An 84-year-old man from West Union died Sunday afternoon after a lawn mower accident on Juniper Road near the intersection of 290th Street, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they received a 911 call around 3:17 p.m. on October 5, 2025, reporting the incident. Upon arrival, investigators learned that Jacob Doren Bricker, 84, had been mowing a ditch when he lost control of his John Deere zero-turn mower, which went off an embankment. Bricker was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, several agencies assisted, including the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Ossian Fire Department, Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance, Gundersen Air, and the La Crosse County Medical Examiner. Officials said the incident remains under investigation.

Authorities are reminding Iowa residents to exercise caution during fall yard maintenance, particularly when mowing near ditches or on uneven terrain. Wet grass, hidden drop-offs, and slopes can significantly increase the risk of rollovers, they said.
