Indianapolis, Indiana – Drivers across central Indiana could encounter slick roads and sudden wind gusts during the late afternoon Sunday as rain showers expand across the Indianapolis area during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, rain coverage will continue increasing through the late morning and early afternoon before peaking between mid and late afternoon. Forecasters say isolated thunderstorms may also develop, with the strongest cells capable of producing wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph before activity weakens this evening.
Rain chances climb steadily through the day across Marion County and surrounding communities, with the highest coverage expected between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Temperatures are forecast to hold in the low to mid-70s while scattered lightning remains possible during stronger showers. Travel along I-65, I-70 and I-69 may become slower during heavier rain bursts, especially near downtown Indianapolis during the afternoon commute window.
Emergency managers advise residents attending outdoor races, cookouts or Memorial Day weekend events to secure loose outdoor items and move indoors quickly if thunder is heard. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated stronger storms could briefly reduce visibility and create ponding on roads.
Conditions are expected to improve quickly this evening, with rain chances tapering after sunset and dry weather expected by around 8 p.m. Additional updates could be issued if thunderstorms strengthen later today.
