Indianapolis, IN – A suspect was shot during a welfare check that escalated into a hostage situation on River Road Wednesday morning. Officers responded to a call concerning a female who was reportedly being held hostage inside an apartment.
According to police, officers arrived on the 7800 block of River Road and attempted to make contact with the apartment occupants. After hearing screams from inside, officers saw a male suspect with a firearm. Forced entry was made, and the suspect fired on officers. Officers returned fire, injuring the suspect.
The adult male suspect was transported to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition. The female inside the apartment was not harmed. Officers were not injured in the incident.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and the IMPD Critical Incident Response Team are investigating the shooting. Officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. Anyone with information should contact Detective Gary Toms at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
