LAKE COUNTY, IN – A Wheatfield woman lost her life in a fatal crash on I-65 Sunday morning.
According to Indiana State Police the accident occurred at approximately 10:09 a.m. when a 2006 Honda made a sudden lane change to exit the interstate onto 61st Avenue. That’s when, reports say, the Honda collided with the right rear of a semi-truck that had come to a stop in the gore area – the paved portion of the shoulder between the ramp and the interstate. The impact was severe, causing catastrophic damage to the driver’s compartment of the Honda.
The driver, identified as Jennifer R. Benton, 37, from Wheatfield, IN, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Meanwhile, a passenger in the Honda managed to exit the vehicle and was taken for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi-truck escaped unharmed.
