Terre Haute, IN – A Maryland man was arrested in Vigo County over the weekend after allegedly shooting two Whitetail Deer from a roadway, according to law enforcement officials.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement, the incident unfolded late Friday night when an off-duty West Terre Haute Police Officer, Derek Pharr, reportedly spotted suspects loading deer into a vehicle. Officer Pharr detained the individuals and called Indiana Conservation Officer Charles Martin to lead the investigation.

The Maryland resident was arrested and booked into the Vigo County Jail. An Illinois resident, who allegedly assisted in the incident, is expected to face charges in Vigo County Court. The charges include illegal taking of a whitetail deer, shooting from a roadway, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and jacklighting—an unlawful hunting method involving artificial light.

Three firearms believed to be used in the incident were confiscated as evidence. The two Whitetail Deer were processed and donated to local families, officials said.

Authorities emphasized that roadside hunting is dangerous and illegal, posing significant safety risks to the public.
