Fort Wayne, IN – Northern Indiana residents were treated to a stunning celestial event Sunday night as the northern lights illuminated the skies, coinciding with the peak of the Perseids meteor shower. The natural light show, visible across the region, offered a rare spectacle of colorful auroras, visible due to the unusually high geomagnetic activity.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana, the northern lights were observed between 11:15 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. The display marked a remarkable prelude to the Perseids, which reached their peak in the early hours of Monday, offering up to 100 meteors per hour under clear skies.
However, the weather is expected to shift later in the week. NWS forecasts indicate that the dry conditions through Wednesday will give way to showers and thunderstorms beginning Thursday. Highs will range from the upper 70s to mid-80s, with lows between the mid-50s and mid-60s. Rainfall amounts could exceed one inch in some areas, particularly as storm activity increases toward the weekend.
Residents are advised to enjoy the mild weather while it lasts and prepare for potentially wet conditions as the week progresses.
