Indianapolis, IN – Temperatures across Indiana are plummeting, with subzero wind chills forecast early Thursday. Residents should prepare for icy conditions, especially in the morning hours. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of dangerously cold temperatures that could impact morning commutes and outdoor activities.
According to the NWS, Wednesday night temperatures will drop to near 1°F with wind chill values making it feel below zero. Skies will clear, and winds will calm overnight, creating optimal conditions for rapid cooling. Thursday is expected to be sunny but bitterly cold, with highs reaching only 24°F.
By Friday, light snow is expected to develop during the afternoon and intensify by the evening, with up to an inch of accumulation possible. This could create slick roadways, particularly along I-465 and other major routes in central Indiana.
Residents are advised to bundle up, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Ensure vehicles are winter-ready and keep emergency kits on hand. Subzero temperatures pose risks of frostbite and hypothermia in under 30 minutes of exposure.
Looking ahead, temperatures will rebound slightly over the weekend, with highs nearing 27°F on Saturday. However, another snow system could move through by Sunday night, bringing additional travel challenges.
