Gary, IN — Beachgoers in Gary and the surrounding area are being warned about hazardous wave conditions along Southeast Lake Michigan through Sunday. The National Weather Service Northern Indiana has issued a high wave alert, urging residents and visitors to exercise caution near the water.

According to the National Weather Service, waves are forecasted to reach heights of 3 to 5 feet on Saturday, reducing slightly to 2 to 4 feet on Sunday. While the weather is expected to be partly cloudy with mild temperatures ranging from 71 to 76 degrees, these conditions can be deceptive and dangerous.

Authorities strongly advise against swimming and recommend staying off piers and breakwalls, where the waves are particularly powerful. The high waves can easily knock people off balance and sweep them into deeper waters, posing significant risks.

Beachgoers are encouraged to wear life jackets if near the shore, remain vigilant, and follow all safety guidelines. The wave risk is expected to decrease as the new week begins, but caution is still advised for those planning to visit the beaches this weekend.
