Bloomington, Indiana – Water is rising on roads across central and west-central Indiana right now as thunderstorms drop up to 2 inches of rain, creating flooding hazards before the early morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Advisory remains in effect until 4:30 a.m. Wednesday for Brown, Clay, Greene, Monroe, Morgan, Owen and Vigo counties. Radar estimates show 1 to 2 inches of rainfall already on the ground, with an additional 0.5 to 1.5 inches possible before the storms weaken.

Low-lying roads, creek crossings and poor drainage areas are the main trouble spots. In Bloomington, Terre Haute and Spencer, standing water may cover neighborhood streets and rural highways. Areas near McCormicks Creek State Park, Prairie Creek and the White River basin could see brief overflow into adjacent fields and roadways.

Drivers along State Road 46, U.S. 41 and rural county routes should slow down and expect sudden water-covered pavement in dark conditions. Emergency managers stress that vehicles can stall in just a few inches of moving water.

Avoid unnecessary travel until after 4:30 a.m. If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around immediately. Additional advisories could be issued if rainfall totals climb before daybreak.
