Shelbyville, IN – Drivers in Shelby County should expect an increased law enforcement presence over the coming weeks as local agencies expand efforts to reduce impaired driving and improve roadway safety.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, the Shelby County Traffic Safety Partnership, which includes the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and the Shelbyville Police Department, recently completed its latest round of impaired driving patrols and made several driving under the influence (DUI) arrests.
While officials did not disclose the number of arrests, they said the enforcement effort identified drivers who were allegedly operating vehicles while impaired.
“We cannot tolerate impaired driving if we want to keep our county roads safe,” Sheriff Chris Holder said in a statement. “The best plan, if you are going to drink, is to not drive.”
The sheriff’s office announced that additional grant-funded patrols will be conducted over the next several weeks. The enforcement campaign will focus on impaired driving as well as seat belt compliance, with deputies and officers increasing their visibility throughout Shelby County.
According to the department, the campaign is intended to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities by deterring dangerous driving behaviors during the busy summer travel season.
Officials also urged residents to report suspected impaired, reckless, or erratic drivers to local dispatch as soon as it is safe to do so. The sheriff thanked the community for helping promote roadway safety and noted that the majority of motorists continue to drive responsibly.
The Shelby County Traffic Safety Partnership said it will continue conducting enforcement and education efforts aimed at keeping local roads safe throughout the summer.
