Indiana Toll Road, IN – A well-intended act of assistance ended in tragedy on the Indiana Toll Road near the Illinois state line Friday. The incident, which involved multiple vehicles, escalated to a fatal collision due to an alleged Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) situation.

According to Indiana State Police, the series of events started when a gray Nissan SUV, suspected of hydroplaning, struck a concrete barrier. A nearby driver in a white Lexus, acting as a good Samaritan, pulled over to offer help. As the driver of the Nissan began walking across the roadway towards the Lexus, the situation took a disastrous turn.

A blue Ford F250, driven by Scott R. Schuch, 55, from Porter, Indiana, was approaching the crash site. In an attempt to avoid the Nissan in the roadway, Schuch’s vehicle made a sudden lane change, striking the Nissan’s driver. The pedestrian, tragically, did not survive the impact and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The aftermath of the collision saw Schuch facing multiple preliminary charges, including Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death. These charges are under review by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.
