Michigan City, IN – A dramatic encounter unfolded in Michigan City when a 16-year-old barricaded himself and fired at police officers. 

According to Michigan City Police reports, the incident, triggered by alerts from the city’s gunshot detection system, led to a tense standoff in the early Sunday. The teen, since Identified as Ja’Narri Garrett-Coleman, is now facing multiple charges, including four counts of attempted murder.

Responding to initial alerts, officers discovered a residence on Tennessee Street hit by gunfire. Subsequent investigations and alerts led them to Garrett-Coleman, who allegedly shot at officers from a residence on Kentucky Street. Despite the gunfire, no officers were injured, and the standoff ended with Garrett-Coleman’s surrender.

The Michigan City Police Department, highlighting the recovery of a loaded handgun modified for automatic fire among the evidence, underscores the gravity of the situation.
