Lowell, IN – Morning snowfall caused hazardous driving conditions across northwest Indiana, leading to dozens of crashes and delays.
Indiana State Police reported 56 property damage crashes and six accidents involving injuries. Troopers also assisted 11 motorists and responded to three slide-offs that required no formal report. The slick conditions slowed westbound travel on I-80/94 between Portage and the Illinois state line. Drivers faced delays of up to 83 minutes. Additional delays occurred on I-65 northbound near Crown Point.
According to the Indiana State Police-Lowell Post, many accidents resulted from drivers following too closely and failing to reduce speeds. Some incidents involved multiple vehicles, increasing travel disruptions. Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution during winter weather by allowing more stopping distance and avoiding sudden maneuvers.
Troopers also warned drivers about bridge decks freezing faster than regular road surfaces. Ice often lingers on bridges even after other parts of the roadway have thawed. Several drivers reported losing control on the icy roads. Officials reminded drivers that four-wheel drive aids acceleration but does not help with braking or steering on ice.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) worked to clear snow from affected areas, but drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant. Motorists should plan for delays, check road conditions, and prepare vehicles for winter travel.
