Hobart, IN – Police apprehended a middle school student Monday after school officials discovered he had a firearm on a bus.

The incident unfolded around 3 p.m. when School City of Hobart personnel reported that a 14-year-old boy was carrying a gun. Officers and school resource personnel immediately intercepted the student on the bus. Authorities found an unloaded handgun in his possession but no ammunition.

According to Hobart Police, the student was taken into custody and later transferred to the Lake County Juvenile Center. Investigators are working to determine how the student obtained the firearm and his intentions.
