Indianapolis, IN – Temperatures are plunging across Central Indiana today, creating hazardous travel conditions on roads like I-465 and I-69. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, as icy patches and slick surfaces have been reported following overnight snow showers.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, temperatures will remain in the teens this morning, with wind chills as low as -5 degrees. A flash freeze has already occurred in many areas, freezing any moisture on roads. Combined with gusty winds reaching up to 55 mph, driving conditions could be treacherous through early morning.
Drivers should reduce speed, avoid using cruise control, and leave extra space between vehicles. High-profile vehicles may face additional challenges due to strong crosswinds. Secure outdoor objects to prevent wind damage, and consider delaying non-essential travel until later today.
Looking ahead, skies are expected to clear by Friday with a high near 30 degrees. The weekend brings mostly sunny conditions, with highs climbing to 40 degrees Saturday and 50 degrees Sunday. However, rain chances return late Sunday into Monday, potentially impacting commutes early next week.
Stay alert to changing conditions and check for updates before heading out. Roadways will improve by midday, but black ice may linger in shaded areas.
