Los Angeles, CA – Santa Ana winds and dry conditions are heightening fire risk across Southern California starting Thursday, with concerns extending through the weekend. Communities near the Santa Monica, San Gabriel, and Santa Susana mountains face the highest danger as wind gusts may reach 45 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, while Red Flag Warnings are not officially in effect, elevated fire risks remain through Saturday. The strongest winds are expected Thursday evening into Friday, with gusts of up to 50 mph possible in some areas. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could spark fires, such as outdoor grilling, while staying vigilant for emergency updates.

In addition, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has extended a No-Burn Day for the South Coast Air Basin, including Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties. The ban prohibits wood burning through Thursday night to reduce fine particle pollution, which can exacerbate asthma and other health conditions. Exceptions are allowed for households relying on wood as a primary heat source or living above 3,000 feet in elevation.

Friday and Saturday will bring sunny skies, with highs in the mid-70s, but winds will continue to pose challenges, particularly in canyon areas. Sunday is forecast to cool slightly, with a high near 70.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, monitor local weather updates, and prepare for possible utility outages due to the winds. For detailed safety tips, visit weather.gov.
