Gary, IN – A shooting Wednesday evening left a 10-year-old child and three adults injured, prompting an ongoing investigation.
According to the Gary Police Department, officers responded around 6:25 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 5800 block of W. 29th Place. As they headed to the scene, additional calls came in, including one reporting that a child had been struck.
Upon arrival, police spoke with the child’s father, who confirmed the 10-year-old had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the neck. The child was taken to Methodist Northlake Hospital and later transferred to the University of Chicago for further care. Officials say the child was inside a residence at the time and was hit by stray gunfire.
Meanwhile, three adult victims—a 22-year-old, 20-year-old, and 18-year-old male, all from Gary—arrived at Methodist Northlake Hospital with gunshot wounds. One of the victims told officers that they were in the street when an altercation escalated into gunfire.
Police say the shooting appears to be an isolated incident with no immediate threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Jervean Gates at 219-881-1209.
